If you are wondering how a 41-year old man was only 11 when Mariah Carey was debuting her vocal histrionics to the world, don't stress your beautiful mind. Supergay is like Billie Jean. She's everywhere.

Three Things
It's mostly Mezzanine stuff, big and small, so if you like Saarinen dining or end tables, I've got 'em. If you like ebony knife rests made in Paris, I've got 'em. If you like Nelson bubble lamps, I've got 'em. And quite a few great gift ideas for Mother's Day (it's next week, I know you forgot).
There's some Hugh overstocked stuff in there too, so even though I will be selling on the web there are a few things I've just got too much of. There is decorative stuff, kitchen stuff, tabletop stuff, furnishing stuff, rug stuff ... essentially, if you like good design and good bargains, you should stop by. And it's only in the store, not much is online.
This weekend is the final weekend, it's open 1-8 today and tomorrow and 1:30-5 on Sunday (do be cognizant of the Tigers' home game schedule). It's located right behind the Fox Theater, next to Centaur, in the retail space formerly known as Hugh.
Number Two
Someone posted this game on Facebook today and I found it to be a more than entertaining timekiller, plus it features unicorns and Erasure! Perfect!
I hope Mark Maynard and his intellectual property people are on the Adult Swim folks about the clear copyright infringement, however.
Number Three
Smoke 'em while you've got 'em! Mercifully, the smoking ban kicks in tomorrow. I'm proud to be from a state that barely avoided being in the last ten states to take this step.
I'm sympathetic to my smoking friends, but this was a long time coming and I have paid a lot of dry cleaning bills because of your nasty habit. I am pleased.
If you are looking to see out the smoking era right, the Ruth Ellis Center has a Ferndale-based bar crawl called "The Last Drag" going on tonight that should be fun. It starts at Loving Touch and ends with a drag show at Club Nine. With plenty of drinking and smoking in-between. More details at the Facebook event page.
And with that, I leave you to your weekend. Have a good one.

OutWeek
Let's go back in time to Gay New York, late 1980's. The AIDS crisis is reaching its pinnacle. ACT UP and Queer Nation have both come on the scene. One member of ACT UP decides that the "mainstream" (well, as mainstream as it was) gay press was not representing this new, more radical approach to activism. He teams up with a guy who wants to advertise his gay phone sex businesses and voila, OutWeek was formed.
Started on the 20th anniversary of Stonewall. Are you almost ready for Stonewall 40?
OutWeek only published for two years but it was incredibly influential. It is most famous for starting the "outing" movement, which began in Michelangelo Signorile's "Gossip Watch" column, but it also routinely broke major news stories. It really achieved national notoriety when it outed Malcolm Forbes in a cover story just after his death.
No context was given for this list, but everyone knew what they were talking about. They may have
been somewhat indiscriminate in casting their net, but they called some of those pretty early.
We will out you after you die, if not before.
OutWeek only lasted two years, but it changed gay journalism. After its publication the Advocate officially became a magazine for lesbians and gay men, for example. And gay activism, which previously could have a hard time getting media coverage, gained a permanent place in the public image of the gay community.Because Jesus loves us, the entire run of OutWeek magazine is available online in PDF format. Take a look through them - they are ALL great reading! And a little bit of a cultural time capsule too, as you can see in these ads.
One upon a time most gays met in person, but even back then you could
still dial up on your 2400 baud modem and chat on the BBS!
It turns out it really was the new frontier in gay communications. Who knew?
There's always room for the fabulous in gay journalism. Then? A fabulous store.
Now? We know her better as the woman who created the looks on Sex and the City.

Gay Day at Detroitist
Don't ask, don't smell.
Take your mind off all the "Detroit on the precipice" anxiety with a workday full of serious-minded gay diversions. It will benefit you more in the long run!.

My current obsession
Will the real Meredith Monk please stand up?
The internet has changed so much about life in the past fifteen years, sometimes in not so great ways (blogging comes to mind), but how in the world would I have found this otherwise?Of course without the internet I probably wouldn't have been able to stay living in Michigan for this long and would be living the dream in New York or something, so I might have discovered it because I never lost my interest in going to weird arthouse films.
Who am I kidding, I definitely would have lost interest in that anyway. Thank God for the internet!

Welcome Metro Times Readers!
The site may have stacked the deck just a tad by soliciting its readers to vote — not that there there's anything wrong with campaigning — but the site is still a total hoot, even for the hetero among us. Self-described as "documenting one upwardly mobile, 30-something man's fight to find the kind of gay life every good homo deserves. In Detroit," Supergay totally rocks. (And we're bettin' Sarah Palin would not approve!)

Stacked the deck indeed! What, I should sit around and wait for good things to happen? No! We are not like the rest of Michigan here at SupergayDetroit - we actually go out and work for our success! But the otherwise kind words are greatly appeciated!
And I do rock! Richard Florida even wrote that when he signed my copy of Who's Your City yesterday at the Creative Cities Summit!
So for all of you first-time visitors - and especially for returning readers - here is a little video to give you an idea of what SGD is all about: pop-culture, humor, wasting time, drag and good production values. Oh, and the occasional NSFW (delicate ears may be offended).
Baby Got Front!
Oh and the Supergay Slate did pretty well - of 27 picks, 15 won. Better than the Tigers! (How do I even know that??) Check out the results here.
Thanks again everyone!
