My current obsession

I am currently obsessed with this video clip from the 1988 film "Book of Days" by experimental filmmaker/performance artist/musical pioneer Jane Child the evil Showgirl Meredith Monk.

Will the real Meredith Monk please stand up?

The internet has changed so much about life in the past fifteen years, sometimes in not so great ways (blogging comes to mind), but how in the world would I have found this otherwise?

Of course without the internet I probably wouldn't have been able to stay living in Michigan for this long and would be living the dream in New York or something, so I might have discovered it because I never lost my interest in going to weird arthouse films.

Who am I kidding, I definitely would have lost interest in that anyway. Thank God for the internet!

My current obsession

Well, this is really an ongoing obsession. But I revisited the 1960's film version of "Sweet Charity" and can't stop watching this.

Seriously fabulous Fosse.

And then the imitators. Well-done by The Gap:

And kind of whored up and dumbed down by Beyonce in "Get Me Bodied" (Sony/BMG has disabled embedding on all the YouTube copies of this video so you have to actually follow the link to watch it - or mouse over that little Snapshot icon. The relevant parts start at 1:15 and end about two minutes later. It's not a great song).

I know I blogged about this early last year but I'm still obsessed.

My current obsession ...

I'm obsessed with Severed Unicorn Heads. I don't know why or, really, what they mean, but they have resonated somewhere deep inside me. So much so, tonight I even drove out to the opening of the Severed Unicorn Head Painfully Beautiful Art Show in Ypsi (another current obsession).

Severed Unicorn Heads are for lovers. Check out more at the Severed Unicorn Head Superstore.

(And for a really great blog that, in part, covers goings on with the cooler aspects of Ypsi, check out Mark Maynard's blog www.markmaynard.com.)

My current obsession ...

... is this video clip for the 1976 British television series "Rock Follies." I don't know too much about the series but here's what I do know:

* the music for the show - including this song - had the music written by Andy Mackay of Roxy Music

* the woman in the middle is Rula Lenska, and if you are old enough (like me) and wondering why you know that name, you may remember her in the Alberto VO5 tv commercials from the late 70's that started out with "I'm Rula Lenska ..." as if she were actually a US celebrity, which she wasn't. A funny take on that
here.

* their cable management system is tremendous.

* this clip is fucking fantastic. I hope it changes your life like it did mine.

Boys and girls, I give you "
Biba Nova."
